another french fairytale

Ma Mere l’Oye 1697.  Sleeping Beauty
Once upon a time, there were twin princesses named
Laideronnette and Bellotte.  The King and Queen were holding a
celebration feast in honor of their baby girls and invited many
fairies, but forgot to invite the evil fairy Magotine.  She was angry
that she was not invited and came to cast spells on the
princesses.  She cursed Laideronnette first and made her
the ugliest girl in the world.  Then she went towards Bellotte,
but the other fairies were able to stop her from cursing her as well.
As the years went by, Laideronnette became even uglier, so much that
she wished to live away from her family in the Tower of the
castle so they would not have to look at her.  She became very
lonely in the tower by herself, so she decided one day to go
outside where she meets a Green Serpent.  She is afraid of the
Serpent and goes out to sea to escape him, but her boat was no
match for the seas and she almost drowned.  The Serpent tried
to help her but she would not accept it.  After the sea storm,
Laideronnette awakens in a far away kingdom where she be-
comes the ruler of the Pagodas.  Over the years in her new
kingdom, Laideronnette begins speaking with the king of the
Pagodas, but only at night because he does not want to be seen
by her.  She falls in love with the king and asks to see him.
The king refuses, but Laideronnette looks at him anyway to
find that she has fallen in love with the Green Serpent that she
is so afraid of.  The king was cursed to be a serpent by Ma-
gotine, the same fairy who cursed Laideronnette.  At first she
could not believe that she loved the serpent and becomes afraid
again and asks not to speak to him.  After a while, Laideron-
nette realizes that she misses speaking with the King and does
not care that he is a serpent.   As the Green Serpent and ugly
Laideronnette are married, the spells by Magotine are broken
and both return to their original beautiful forms.  Love is
stronger than the evil Magotine.

Once upon a time, there was a young apprentice who worked for an
old sorcerer.  The apprentice really wanted to learn magic like the
sorcerer, but was usually given jobs such as fetching the water and
cleaning chores.  When left alone to fetch water one day, the appren-
tice decided to try using some magic.  He enchanted the broomstick to
fetch the water from the well, but after the basin was filled with water
he did not know how to stop the broomstick!  It kept marching back
and forth collecting water from the well and pouring water into an
overflowing basin!  In a panic, the apprentice found an ax and
chopped the broom in pieces in order to stop the flooding.  However,
the spell did not leave the broom, and soon the pieces of broom were
marching with pails of water flooding the sorcerer’s workshop.  Just
as the apprentice seems to have lost hope, the sorcerer returns and
angrily breaks the spell the apprentice had put on the broomstick.  The
sorcerer is able to clean up the mess but not without giving a stern
look at his apprentice who learned that he needs more time fetching
water before he can use magic ,
